Moreton Bay is a bay located on the east coast of Australia, 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) from the center of Brisbane, Queensland. When it was found that it was not safe to enter Moreton Bay between Moreton and North Stradbroke Islands, a route was taken along the northern end of Moreton Island.
When the floods stopped and the tides returned to normal, currents in the bay were used to carry wood north, to the Brisbane River or to Dunwich for shipment to Sydney. The bay is also home to abundant wildlife such as whales, dolphins, dugongs, sharks and turtles. It is also known for its crystal blue waters, vast sandbanks and diverse wildlife. Eight decades ago it had a less placid existence as a major coastal defense port during World War II. Once in danger of sand extraction, Moreton Island's mining activity ended when it was estimated that tourism was an economically viable alternative. Control of the island became dependent on the state park service in 1993. Developed bridges, piers and cays add a different human geometry to this vast bay on the east coast of Australia.
